Windhoek

Windhoek is Namibia’s capital, situated more or less in the middle of the country. It sits in a valley on a high plateau, sparing it the worst of the Summer heat. It is easily accessible by both road and air but has no public transport services, with only taxis available. Nevertheless, the city is well laid out and easy to navigate.
Windhoek itself has few tourist attractions but serves well as a springboard to destinations further afield. It has a large selection of accommodation options – from budget to luxury – and there are several good restaurants and a couple of museums and galleries worth visiting if staying for more than a night.

Plan Your Trip

Windhoek is well served by land and air travel and is generally visited by tourists en route to or from other destinations in the country. Although there are only a few tourist attractions in the city and its surroundings, Windhoek does offer numerous accommodation options. Visitors with time to spare have a modest selection of museums, heritage sites, and the National Botanical Gardens to visit within the city. On the outskirts of Windhoek lies the Daan Viljoen Game Park, a small reserve popular with local residents and ideal for a day trip. For those embarking on self-drive trips, the city has numerous modern malls and shopping centres to stock up on supplies.
