Visitors from overseas will find the route is well-serviced by numerous airlines, arriving at Hosea Kutako International Airport. This airport is about 40km from the city centre, and there is no public transport servicing the route. The only option is a taxi or a prearranged hotel shuttle. Some vehicle rental companies offer free pick-up/drop-off at the airport. Domestic flights to and from the city occur at Eros Municipal Airport. Note that if you are connecting to or from an international flight, it will take about an hour’s travel time between the two airports. Namibia’s primary road network is in good condition and well-maintained, so travel to Windhoek is simple. Secondary roads are generally gravel, and in some instances, a 4×4 vehicle may be necessary.

As a city destination and possible stop-over pre- or post-tour, Windhoek can be visited at any time of the year. Despite being in the middle of what is typically a hot country, the altitude ensures that visitors are spared the worst of the desert heat. On average, Windhoek has 330 days of sunshine per annum. The average daily temperature is only 13.4 °C (56.1 °F), with the warmest month being December, with an average of 23.5 °C (74.3 °F), and the coldest July, at 13.1 °C (55.6 °F). Precipitation is common in Summer (October-April), while scarce through the rest of the year. Visitors staying more than a couple of days in winter are advised to bring warm clothing.
