The Maramba Farm Donkey Sanctuary & Farm Tour has opened its gates to visitors, offering a 90-minute guided tour around the working farm and donkey sanctuary. Visitors will not only enjoy a unique farm and animal sanctuary experience but also gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing local communities, working animals, and the environment — and the important role that compassion, sustainability, and education can play in creating positive change.

The farm is a safe haven for working donkeys who have lived hard lives, and it is also a place where visitors can come to learn, connect, and enjoy the beauty of its’ surroundings. Magnificent indigenous trees and abundant birdlife help to create an oasis, close to the centre of bustling Livingstone.

The sanctuary is HQ for Zambezi Working Donkey Project (ZWDP), a local NGO and proud Africa’s Eden Community & Conservation Partner. They are dedicated to improving the lives of working donkeys. ZWDP undertakes educational outreach work and mobile veterinary clinics, harness-making and training for rural communities whose lives depending on working donkeys, as well a rescue and rehabilitation centre for donkeys who need short or long-term care. Every tour directly supports their work caring for animals, protecting the environment, and supporting rural communities.

Guests are welcomed at the on-site visitor centre by their guide, who will give an introduction to the farm and the work of ZWDP. They are then taken for a walk around the orchards and paddocks, interacting with the retired rescued donkeys, hearing their stories, and gaining insights into sustainable farming, working animal welfare, and the role donkeys play in supporting livelihoods across rural Zambia. It is unhurried, grounded, and genuinely moving. Following the tour, there is an offer of light refreshments, and a chance to sit and relax. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and there is also a play area to keep little people entertained!

Tours are available by advance booking from Tuesday to Saturday, with two daily departures at 09:00 and 14:00. The experience is suitable for all ages and works equally well for families with young children, wildlife and animal enthusiasts, and sustainability-focused travelers. Private tours and group events can be arranged flexibly outside of these hours, making it easy to incorporate into lodge programmes, school groups, or bespoke itineraries.
