MAWIMBI Bush Camp

MAWIMBI is an exclusive safari lodge in the heart of Kafue River in Kafue National Park. It’s perfectly situated between the great Kafue River and a natural wetland, with incredible wildlife sightings from the comfort of your armchair. Our Zambian staff all love sharing their knowledge and culture with guests and welcome them in like family.

MAWIMBI is more than a safari – it’s a return to the authentic soul of Africa.

MAWIMBI Bush Camp

Mawimbi Bush Camp offers a deeply authentic wildlife experience in the heart of Kafue National Park, where just eight guests are welcomed into one of Africa’s last great wildernesses.

Uniquely positioned between the Kafue River and a natural wetland, wildlife thrive in this unfenced park. From the comfort of the lapa, watch nine elephants in a mud bath less than 500 metres away where lions have taken prey and the birdlife is abundant. Leopards pad through camp on their nocturnal wanderings, and a civet (not to be outdone) marks his territory.

Four beautifully designed tented suites rest along the riverbank, each with sweeping views across water that changes character with the light. Private decks offer plunge pools for lazy afternoons and heated tubs for evenings when the African sky comes alive overhead. Inside, extra-length king or twin beds, en-suite bathrooms, and open-air showers beneath the stars create a sanctuary that feels both luxurious and utterly immersed in the wilderness.

Talented chefs prepare delicious local cuisine, and nights unfold around the fire as the Milky Way spills its secrets across the darkness. This is where adventures are shared, deep friendships form and silence is savoured, with the most beautiful and varied bush soundtrack.

With access to Kafue National Park’s vast 22,400 square kilometres—home to over 150 mammal species, 500 bird species, and some of Southern Africa’s most thriving predator populations, MAWIMBI’s expert guides lead wildlife-rich game drives, intimate walking safaris, and seasonal river trips. Kafue remains refreshingly under-explored, offering the kind of solitude and sense of discovery that only a remote park can offer.

Independently owned and built with meticulous care, MAWIMBI operates with minimal environmental impact. Solar power, comprehensive wastewater treatment, and locally sourced supplies reflect a genuine commitment to sustainability. Guest fees support African Parks’ conservation work across Kafue and fund community projects, ensuring the benefits of tourism reach those who live closest to the wilderness.

The team has been handpicked for their love of the bush and their passion for conservation. It shows in everything they do – the warmth of their hospitality, the depth of their knowledge, the care they bring to each guest’s experience. This is more than work for them, it’s a calling and guests become part of the MAWIMBI family.

MAWIMBI Bush Camp pairs beautifully with North Kafue’s Busanga Plains, the Lower Zambezi, Victoria Falls, or South Luangwa, offering an exclusive and unforgettable stay as part of a Zambian itinerary.

Walking Safaris
Zambia is cited as the birthplace of the walking safari and when the grass is low, MAWIMBI’s private concession is where guests have intimate encounters with wildlife. It’s a birder’s paradise and entomologists will love the diversity in every step.
River Trips
River trips are seasonal and hippos and crocs are a classic sight as the great Kafue River rises significantly in the Summer. In Winter, the river’s deepest stretch is on the far side of the Kafue and in front of the lodge, exposed boulders and vast swathes of rock are revealed as the perfect sundowner spots.
Game Drives
Our expert guides navigate the Kafue, where wild dogs rest and lions sun themselves, paired Bateleur eagles preen and the Fish Eagle cries. One doesn’t need to go far to experience the rich wildlife on MAWIMBI’s doorstep.
