Why Gaborone?

Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, is one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities. Known for its political stability and economic dynamism, the city has become a hub for finance, commerce, and regional trade. Its location, just 15 km from the South African border, makes it a natural partner for Johannesburg in promoting cross-border connectivity. Jillian Blackbeard, CEO of Africa’s Eden and a proud Gaborone native, shared her perspective:

“As someone who calls Gaborone home, I am thrilled to see this direct service launched. Gaborone is not only my hometown but also a thriving business hub that connects people and ideas across Southern Africa. This new route makes the city even more accessible for travellers and investors, and it highlights Botswana’s role as a vital player in the region’s growth story.”

But Gaborone isn’t just about business. The city is surrounded by attractions that appeal to leisure travellers too. The Gaborone Game Reserve offers a chance to see antelope, warthog, and rich birdlife within city limits, while the Kgale Hill hike rewards visitors with sweeping views over the capital. Cultural highlights include the National Museum and Art Gallery, traditional craft markets, and a growing culinary scene blending local flavours with modern trends.

For those looking to explore further, Gaborone serves as a gateway to Botswana’s iconic wilderness destinations such as the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, and the vast Makgadikgadi Pans.

Strengthening Africa’s Eden Connections

With the addition of Gaborone, SAA deepens its role in connecting the region’s distinct destinations, reinforcing Africa’s Eden’s vision of promoting seamless travel across Southern Africa. For travellers and the travel trade alike, this new route creates opportunities to build more integrated itineraries that combine Botswana with neighbouring countries, enhancing the appeal of multi-country journeys.
