Tourism, CSR and the Children in Kazangula Village, Botswana

Tourism cannot fully thrive if the lives of community members around the tourist sites and tourism capitals are not uplifted. With this ethos, the tourism sector in the Kaza region has taken a keen interest in the Africa’s Eden Pledge by engaging in Community Social Responsibility activities.

Find out more about how Africa’s Eden member Kubu Lodge is working at improving the lives of Kazangula community members as the tourism industry around Chobe National Park continues to grow.

The Centre in Kazangula

The Kazungula Children’s Ark Day Care Centre project was established in 2005 to create a safe and loving environment for children aged 2 ½ years to 6 years. The intention was to provide a space where youngsters could learn, play and feed in a structured and healthy environment.

The centre has been operating on generous donations and support from Kubu Lodge and their clients, as well as Kasane and Kazungula residents. In addition, to ensure the sustainability and viability of the project, Kubu Lodge offered one of its buildings free of charge.

The Fantastic Team

The beneficiaries of this project are underprivileged children in the Kazangula district of Botswana. Many are single or double orphans and HIV positive children. The centre has space for 30 children, and enrolment is already at capacity.

The Kazungula Children’s Ark Day Care Centre is staffed by six volunteers from Kazungula Village who give up their time and put in the effort each day teaching, playing, loving and feeding the children.

A Bright Future for the children of Kazangula

The children follow a learning program approved by the Ministry of Education in Botswana. The facility also has a library and Youth Centre that helps encourage children, teenagers and adults to develop a reading culture. Children at the centre are also offered ICT lessons.

Monitoring Health and Wellbeing

A feeding program enables children to have breakfast each day upon arrival, lunch and an afternoon snack before home time. In addition, children enrolled at the centre are weighed and have their height measured every month to ensure that every child is growing well. The children are also taken to visit the local medical clinic once a term for a general check-up.

Activities at Kazangula Children’s Ark

In November, Christmas and Graduation are celebrated at the Kazungula Children’s Ark Day Care Children’s Centre. The festive time accompanies gift-giving, supported by the parents and caregivers. Throughout the year, the kids are also encouraged to engage in various sporting activities as part of their extra-curricular activities.
